Separation of marriage and government

I want to get government out of the marriage business entirely, allowing churches to marry whom they may, but allowing the government to only perform civil unions. This will protect both the equal protection clause of the Constitution and those who disagree about definitions of marriage. The state shall not be able to define marriage. Each person, and church shall have the right to define marriage on their own terms.

Why is this important?

There is only one way to solve the gay marriage issue. We need to separate marriage from the government. Let churches marry whom the may according to their beliefs, but get government out of the marriage business altogether. Religious issues and civil rights cannot and should not be decided by vote, thus both sides of the gay marriage argument have nothing further to argue about.
