Shell Oil has no business in Seattle

Let’s send an important message to the Mayor of Seattle, government officials, the Port of Seattle and the World that we as a society need to move towards more sustainable, less-destructive and less polluting forms of energy in order to help create the economy of tomorrow. Climate change is a real concern and this is a chance to do something about it. In 2012 Shell already proved that they cannot safely drill for oil in Arctic Waters. Our beautiful Puget Sound is for salmon estuaries, swimming, sailboats, Orca Pods, pristine water, and beautiful vistas. Let us not risk spoiling this by becoming an Oil Superhighway for Shell’s Arctic Drilling endeavor!

Why is this important?

Back in 2001, after completing Graduate School, I moved to Seattle from Texas and instantly fell in love with Washington and, moreover, our beautiful gem of a city, Seattle. I walked around in awe for the first year here as I had never quite seen any place so beautiful! I loved the Cascades, the Olympics, the beautiful city parks and waterways, the majestic tree-covered Seattle hills, the birds, the other wildlife and the fact that we actually have an Orca Pod not far from the city! The sunsets on a clear day over the Olympics are a religious experience. Most incredible though is our awesome cold, deep and clear Puget Sound. I have spent many moments sailing, hiking around and swimming in its cold clear waters. Although our Puget Sound it is deep, wild and beautiful, it is also quite vulnerable and we must be even more proactive in protecting it!
It is because of my deep love for this special area that I am asking you sign this petition.
Seattle is now my home and I do not want to see this beautiful place put at risk under the guise of economic expansion. Let us figure out how to build more jobs and a better economy on new green and clean technology and not with fossil fuels, which carry health and environmental risks.
The Port Commission’s decision to approve the lease of Terminal 5 to Foss Maritime for Shell’s arctic rigs without a public hearing places the entire region in danger and sets a less than positive precedent for transparency and decisions made contrary to Seattle’s core values. Seattle becoming a hub for harmful fossil fuels does not fit our Pacific Northwest values or brand, and more importantly puts our beautiful coastline waters and fragile eco-system at great risk for irreparable pollution and damage.
On a global level, climate change is a major concern and Seattle has the opportunity to send a valuable message to the rest of the world regarding arctic drilling and fossil fuels in general. Let’s not squander this valuable opportunity to further our legacy as a green, intelligent and progressive city!
