Sidewalks for Rainey Street in Austin, TX

The Rainey Street area has blossomed into a hip place to be and there is lots of pedestrian traffic since no place has enough parking. But if the City of Austin doesn't act fast there could be some traffic fatalities if they don't provide sidewalks for the walking traffic on Rainey Street.

Why is this important?

I live in the area and have seen crowded streets with people walking in the street and auto traffic narrowed to two lanes.
The popularity of the area has expanded faster than the street can handle and the pedestrians are at risk. The City of Austin could have saved itself a pile of money if they had just demanded that the businesses along the street put in sidewalks in front of their property as a condition of getting a permit. But that horse is out of the barn and the safety is now an issue for the City.
