Social Workers Should Be Utilized In NYC Police Officer Retraining Efforts
New York City based social workers should be utilized in Mayor de Blasio's efforts to retrain New York City police officers. Social workers are professionally trained in working with people that live under different circumstances who hold different, but valuable perspectives. This knowledge would be very beneficial in the retraining efforts because the police officers would acquire an understanding of the human experience from a different perspective. This perspective would assist in attaining the goal of having the police officers continue to serve and protect while using a more person aware approach.
Why is this important?
As a social worker, I take the mission of enhancing the well-being of individuals, families, and communities very seriously. In the wake of the Michael Brown and Eric Garner rulings, social workers are needed more than ever to create and support positive change.
