Socially Responsible Program for Guns in Albuquerque

Whereas gun safety has become a national concern, and
Whereas the citizens of Albuquerque have suffered from gun violence, and
Whereas economic development depends on having a safe and peaceful community, and
Whereas we have established an acceptable method to restrict abuse and to mitigate the damage from automobiles (a tool that is widely used but like guns can cause serious damage and injury), and
Whereas guns do not serve as useful a purpose in our society as automobiles,
We the undersigned urge Mayor Berry and the city council of Albuquerque to take action to safeguard our community by passing new ordnances for the city of Albuquerque to:
-restrict the sale and advertisement of guns and ammunition to adult only venues to limit the enticement of children;
-implement a program to register all guns in the city so we know who is responsible for the use of each gun;
-license all gun users so we know they have an acceptable background and level of competence; and
-require that all guns be insured so that victims of gun violence can be compensated.

Why is this important?

The time has come to enact a socially responsible program to hold accountable those people we allow to use guns.
