The anti-gun control proponents primary argument is the 2nd amendment, which I concur with. Though I believe the right to bare arms as written into the constitution had a far different intention than what is argued today.
Let's diffuse the 2nd amendment argument... let's uphold it...let gun owners keep their weapons... just HEAVILY TAX THE PURCHASE of weapons, and TAX THEM ANNUALLY for owning them. We could even allow assault weapons but how many would be purchased if there was a $5000 dollar tax on purchasing and a $1000 dollar per year ownership tax.
This could generate significant revenue to fund the NRA's proposed solution to scenarios like Sandy Hook. That of placing armed guards in every school,which I personally oppose. But if that is the solution, let the gun owners and the NRA fund it.
We tax smokers (which also kills), boat owners, car owners, home owners, et al.
If a person has to pay 2 or 3 times more when purchasing weapons and ammunition, plus an annual fee for ownership, it will go a long way toward reducing the number of weapons, and toward raising revenues to fund the programs of background checks, buy backs, etc.
I urge all legislators to seriously consider this solution.
