STOP changes in Aetna insurance Coverage for Lactation Support

Lactation Consultants and families are outraged about the following changes beginning Sept, 2024.

*Aetna will be reducing the number of lactation visits they cover. Currently they pay for 6 visits with no co-pay. Aetna claims that they will still allow 6 visits. However, they will only pay the “lactation class” code that pays very little and does not provide for the time needed for a 1:1 consultation.

*Aetna claims to cover telehealth for lactation services. However, Aetna has announced that it will no longer allow Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) to use the 992XX and 9921X codes. This decreases provider payments for telehealth so significantly that most IBCLC’s will no longer offer telehealth consultations.

*Aetna also is removing codes that enable IBCLCs to spend more than the usual time with patients. (extended time codes)

All of these changes will decrease the quality of care that providers are able to offer to their patients and will eliminate access to care for many families.

Why is this important?

If we do not fight these changes they will happen. We have nothing to lose by objecting and everything to gain if we are able to make a difference. Please sign the petition!
