Stop Facebook's Dangerous, Hypocritical Policy!
The demanding of legal names and uploading of sensitive personal information when it's not needed, ignoring basic self identification rights and endangering others by forcing use of documented names.
Why is this important?
People have been selling commissions or crafts or goods under a pseudonym alongside MILLIONS of others on Deviantart, Etsy and other places. National bestselling authors often don't use their real names. Neither do many musicians and movie stars. Legal names are required through private entities such as Paypay for monies involved. That makes sense. Requiring a drivers license to use FREE social media DOES NOT.
Requiring users to not only use but to upload documents to Facebook revealing their identity in full is ridiculous and dangerous as this has now happened multiple times. Losing my FB account also affects apps and business in my professional and personal life. And I am not the only one this is happening to.
Facebook has a notorious reputation of being a hub for violent offenders and has disregarded Internet safety 101: never ever use your real name for social media or email. Dangerous people can find and track targets without effort and Facebook's targeted harassment for otherwise well known and widely used and accepted pseudonyms constitutes nothing short of reckless endangerment and disregarding the welfare of others.
Facebook has no right to force anyone to use and provide documented proof of someone's identity, especially when harassing native peoples because their names are "unconventional" and this bias boarders on racism when there are THOUSANDS of offensive and obviously fake names all over Facebook right now. And as long as -someone- has your ID; Facebook will provide them with an account to impersonate you; which is why using pseudonyms and nicknames IS IMPORTANT. Real family and friends will know that's really you.
Facebook refuses to remove bluntly obvious violence and sexual content from its site but will ban access to an account because they think SILVERWOLF and other such names shouldn't be used; even when; as in my case, it's part of a PUBLISHED work and identity.
This needs to stop. A site that is willing to endanger the lives and the welfare of those who use their services shouldn't be allowed to continue. People who do business on Facebook are allowed "business" names and not made to upload documented proof of individual names. People who simply post updates or participate in groups or to chat with friends should be able to do so comfortably under whatever name without having to endanger themselves in this cyber era by being forced to use and show legal information.
I am not buying nor selling nor running a business and I should be allowed to do so under a name I've had on my Facebook account for OVER 5 YEARS.
I need your help letting others know and to speak up for your own (and your families) internet safety!
Online gaming companies, such as PSN (Playstation Network for the Sony gaming machines) and XboX Live (for the Microsoft gaming platforms) allow every user to use "handles" online to access everything from online games to purchasing content and movies playable on their consuls. Only when a purchase is made do the parties responsible for sending and receiving the payment ask for legal ID such as verified PayPal accounts or credit/debit cards. NEVER do they expect you to post your real name for EVERYONE to see/use/abuse.
How much business do you think Sony and Microsoft would lose if they started implementing Facebooks policy of "legal names only" which is expected to be proven by UPLOADING a photo of a drivers license, marriage certificate, birth certificate or other "government" IDs?
Gaming and computer companies whom are at the forefront of social networks and sharing understand the importance of anonymity and protecting the identity of their members whether they pay to play or not.
Why can't Facebook respect this simple safety?
