Stop Giving Permits to Fracking Criminals

We, the undersigned, are calling on you to direct Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Patrick McDonnell to halt further permitting of shale gas activities. Rewarding criminals with permits to make more profits at the expense of Pennsylvanians’ health, safety, and wellbeing is irresponsible and unacceptable.

Why is this important?

On June 17th, the Better Path Coalition submitted the folowing letter to PA Governor Wolf. He has yet to acknowledge it. We are asking you to sign this petition to help build pressure on Governor Wolf.

Dear Governor Wolf,

Attorney General Josh Shapiro has begun announcing the results of a two-year Grand Jury investigation into fracking companies operating in the Commonwealth. To date, he has announced very serious breaches of the law that resulted in two charges filed against Range Resources and 15, including nine felonies, against Cabot Oil & Gas. He has indicated that this is just the beginning, that many more companies will be charged.

Over the two years of the investigation, more than 2,800 unconventional permits have been issued to fracking companies. Of those, 213 have gone to Cabot; 346 have gone to Range. In fact, during the first half of June, the DEP issued 28 permits. Only five of those permits were issued to companies other than the two companies that were charged with crimes during that same period. Range received 6 permits; Cabot received 17.

Both of the companies charged are well-known for their recidivist behavior. Attorney General Shapiro noted that in his statements. Cabot has racked up more than 760 violations in PA. Range Resources has been cited by the DEP with 943 violations, including the case that resulted in the historic $8.9 million fine that was later rescinded without explanation. Their combined violations represent a fraction of those issued by the DEP. We expect that other serial violators will be named in upcoming announcements.

Nothing resembling justice can be served if the protracted process of investigating these companies results in no more than fines and compulsory charitable contributions leaving one hand as new permits are placed in the other.

Respectfully,

Better Path Coalition
