AG Uthmeier: Stop attacking drag performers and violating our First Amendment rights!
Florida's top cop is coming for drag—and he's trampling on the Constitution to do it.
A court has given Attorney General James Uthmeier the green light to enforce Florida's anti-drag law after it was blocked for over two years. He's wasting no time using it to harass performers, threaten venues and queer people, and trample the First Amendment.
Here's what Uthmeier has already done:
Here's what Uthmeier has already done:
- Subpoenaed a Vero Beach restaurant for surveillance footage and lists of everyone who attended a Pride event—without charging anyone with a crime
- Demanded Pensacola cancel a legal, adults-only Christmas drag show, calling it "demonic"
- Acting on tips from hate groups like Moms for Liberty, who have filed complaints about shows they didn't even attend
This is government censorship. This is unconstitutional. This has to stop. AG Uthmeier must:
- Stop enforcing this unconstitutional law
- Drop the subpoenas demanding guest lists and surveillance footage
- Stop harassing LGBTQ+ performers, venues, and communities
- Respect the First Amendment and our right to free expression
Drag is art. Drag is resistance. Drag is joy.
Why is this important?
Drag is protected speech. Federal courts already said this law is probably unconstitutional. Uthmeier is only enforcing it because of a legal loophole—not because it's suddenly okay.
The law is intentionally vague. Since "lewd" isn't defined, Uthmeier can go after anyone. Performers face jail time. Venues can lose their businesses. And get this: even if a teenager uses a fake ID to sneak into your show, you can still be prosecuted. There's no defense.
Your privacy is at risk. When you go to a drag show, the government shouldn't be collecting your name and tracking you. That's exactly what the First Amendment protects against. But Uthmeier is demanding guest lists anyway.
Hate groups are calling the shots. Moms for Liberty and similar extremist groups are monitoring drag shows and filing complaints about events they didn't even attend—taking photos out of context and demanding the government crack down. Uthmeier is doing their bidding.
Fear is the point. Uthmeier wants performers too scared to perform and venues too scared to book them. He's trying to kill drag in Florida without having to prove anything in court.
We won't let him.
