The Children’s Place must stop selling apparel that not only reinforces gender norms but perpetuates negative stereotypes of women. Shirts that say “I got my drama from my mama” reinforce harmful images of mothers and women that are grounded in patriarchy.
Why is this important?
I want to be supportive of brick and mortar retailers and enjoy the experience of taking my daughter shopping for clothing. But young girls — and boys — should have the ability to chose clothing that doesn’t reinforce gender norms and especially doesn’t reinforce negative stereotypes of women.
