The state of Oregon needs to designate Oregon rivers and streams STATE SCENIC WATERWAYS in order to stop suction dredge mining of those bodies of water. Failing at this limited action, Gov. Kitzhaber shall outlaw all suction dredge mining in the state of Oregon.
Why is this important?
Gold miners pay almost nothing to access Oregon rivers/streams to suction river bed gravels for gold. These floating gas/diesel powered motors pollute the water, the process degrades the river bed for salmon spawning, and the returning sand/gravel/mud turns the clear water muddy. Oregon taxpayers are left holding the bill for cleanup. California has banned this practice statewide.
