To: GRETCHEN WHITMER, GOVERNOR OF MICHIGAN
Stop The Expansion Of Hazardous Waste In Our Community
US ECOLOGY NORTH is seeking a permit to expand hazardous waste storage capacity by 9 times just East of Hamtramck on Georgia Street.
TO GOVERNOR WHITMER: WE SAY NO MORE HAZ WASTE in OUR COMMUNITY!
Currently, there are ten commercial facilities that accept hazardous waste from off-site sources. These facilities are heavily concentrated in Wayne County, with all but two being located there. These facilities are also disproportionately located in communities of color and low-income. Of the 60,405 collective people that live within 1-mile of one of the ten commercial hazardous waste facilities, 59% are low-income, and 70% are people of color.
To address this environmental injustice, we ask
GOVERNOR WHITMER :
Use your powers as the executive
1) to address the environmental injustice concerns and direct MD EGLE to deny U.S. Ecology’s significant expansion of its hazardous waste storage and treatment facility,
2) Promote and sign legislation that stops the concentration of commercial hazardous waste facilities in low-income communities of color

Why is this important?
We are residents and concerned neighbors of the COALITION TO OPPOSE THE EXPANSION OF US ECOLOGY- Detroit.
There are more than 25K people within 2 miles of the US ECOLOGY NORTH hazardous waste facility. We must protect our people, our water, our air from further pollution and potential harm from a facility fire or a truck accident/spill, impacting our neighborhoods.
