STOP THE FILLING OF OUR RIVERS WITH SEDIMENT AND TOXINS DISCHARGED BY LOGGING and AGRICULTURE

PETITION to U.S. EPA and ARMY CORPS
STOP THE FILLING OF OUR RIVERS WITH SEDIMENT AND TOXINS DISCHARGED BY LOGGING and AGRICULTURE
Congress specifically intended that “activities which could destroy wetlands or other waters should be subject to regulation” to assure protection of our lives and homes, domestic water supplies and fish. Yet EPA and ARMY CORPS have provided exemptions for Logging and Agriculture despite clear evidence that these activities are damaging public and private properties. EPA and ARMY CORPS must address the inherent inequity and consequences of their policies to ensure equal protection for all citizens.
For almost twenty years our homes in Elk River have been devastatingly affected by the negative impacts of logging and agriculture; wholly preventable activities that destroy water quality, increase unnatural flooding, and directly threaten the health and safety of the residents. Rather than prevent pollution, government has chosen to provide exemptions for the polluters who damage our communities; by the same measure government has chosen to kill salmon and other aquatic species.
Before pollution can be legally approved, it must be demonstrated that any change in water quality will be consistent with the maximum benefit to the people of the state. EPA and ARMY CORPS have demonstrated no such proof and all credible evidence shows serious violations of rights and severe damage to properties. We the people entrusted government to protect, not damage, the public trust.
We are suffering with endless discharges of sediment and pollutants that fill our river channels, kill salmon and contaminate our only water source. This in-filling causes unnatural flooding that threatens lives, damages homes, farms, and the Public Trust while blocking access to emergency services, jobs, and schools. Government-authorized river in-filling violates the Public Trust.
EPA and ARMY CORPS’ logging and agricultural exemptions must be examined and withdrawn. Why should polluters, with government’s support, destroy the health of Elk River and the lives of the residents? EPA and ARMY CORPS have the authority and the duty to enforce regulations that uphold the intent of Congress to assure protection of lives and homes. As Trustees, you must protect our rivers, our salmon and the people. EPA and ARMY CORPS--- Why do your regulations enable damage to the Public Trust and threaten the lives of people?
STOP UNLAWFUL EXEMPTIONS FOR LOGGING AND AGRICULTURAL POLLUTERS
