Stop the governments war on the American people
Stop the prosecution of simple drug possession cases for all drugs. Set up a safe, regulated, and taxed system for distributing recreational drugs. Set this system up in a way that is both safe and advantageous to the public. The system needs to be in two parts. One system would cover the small businesses that would arise from the farming, simple processing and distribution of "softer" drugs like marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms, and opium. This system would also cover the creation and distribution of edibles and other bi-products of these substances. The second part of the system would cover those drugs that take a more complex chemical process to make: cocaine, heroine, methamphetamine, and lsd. These drugs would need to be processed in labs and distributed through a more tightly monitored, pharmacy-like, distribution method where the quantities purchased by an individual over a period of time would need to be monitored and controlled. Set these system up in a manner that creates small business opportunities, and creates jobs, and keeps these drugs out of the hands of major corporations like Phillip-Morris or the pharmaceutical companies . Use the revenue from this system to address and correct the social ills that cause many to turn to drugs, to educate the public about drugs, to prevent drug abuse, and to treat drug addiction. Use this system to re-purpose those prison guards and law enforcement officers, who would otherwise become jobless, into the supervisory and regulatory positions needed to manage the system. Create new drug laws that address these changes, and that offer more strict penalties for those who operate outside of these guidelines. Basically, take the drug trade away from the criminals, legalize it, licence it, and tax it, but stop persecuting us for it.
Why is this important?
This is about ending the useless and expensive "war on drugs". Many of the people our government is waging this war on are our own citizens. Not only that, but the war on drugs has created a black market ran by criminals to fund criminal endeavors and organization, and to fund terrorism. The war on drugs also siphons money out of our country. The war on drugs hurts us in many more ways than it helps us.
