Stop the University of Louisville Hospital merger

We, the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Louisville along with citizens of Louisville, Kentucky do not support the merger between the University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital, St. Mary’s Healthcare, and Saint Joseph Health System. We believe that the quality of healthcare for the population of Louisville will decline, particularly for low-income patients. We believe that the quality of education of medical students at the hospital will be affected negatively. We believe that the quality of the University Hospital employee’s health insurance plans is threatened by the merger. Furthermore, we believe that the University of Louisville Hospital is a public entity and the merger violates the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution. We urge the leadership of the University of Louisville, the University Hospital, and the state government of Kentucky not to allow the merger to take place.

Why is this important?

UofL hospital is merging with Catholic Health Initiative, Jewish Hospital, St. Mary’s Healthcare, and Saint Joseph Health System. Due to this, 70% of the hospital will now be under Catholic rule. Reproductive services will be altered due to this. Many basic procedures will no longer be available at the University hospital location. Tubal ligations, among other procedures will be moved to Baptist East, causing student training and client accessibility to be taken into question.
