The use of corn for ethanol production is inflating food prices and more recently, it has been announced by mainstream news outlets that there will also be a shortage of livestock because there is not enough feed to go around to adaquately support them . Hence, this will result in higher prices for beef, poultry, and pork and related by products as well. The congressional ethanol mandate must be overturned that specifies corn or any essential food crop as a source for the production of fuel. There are other crops that can easily be substituted for corn and can produce a higher yield of ethanol without inflating food prices and causing shortages of food.
Why is this important?
Corn is a widely used crop for food and as a food product used in the production of countless other foods. At this juncture with corn already being in short supply, ethanol producers are taking a scarce food and using it for fuel instead of feeding the populace.
