Support Helmet Laws for Minors
Dear Iowa legislator and Governor Terry Branstad,
I am writing to ask you to support a mandatory helmet law for children under the age of 18 riding a moped or scooter. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers in Iowa with nearly half of all teen fatalities between the ages of 14 and 17 linked to vehicle accidents. Without a law in place, Iowa legislators are telling Iowa teens that although their parents may think helmets are important, our state officials do not think helmets are necessary. We work so hard to keep our children healthy and safe, please do not thwart our efforts. Please help Iowa parents protect our children by making helmets mandatory for children under the age of 18.

Why is this important?
In 2011 Iowa teen Caroline Found was killed in a moped accident. She was not wearing a helmet. Motor Vehicle deaths are the leading cause of death among Iowa teens. There is currently no law saying that minors must wear helmets when operating mopeds and scooters.
