Support Overtime Pay

Dear representative,

Workers deserve fair pay for the work they do each day. And despite its name, the Working Families Flexibility Act (HR 1406) will do nothing more than cut the wages of workers and force longer unpaid hours on the job.

I strongly urge you to oppose this legislation and instead support legislation that offers all workers fair pay and benefits on the job.

This "comp time" bill claims to give hourly workers more time with their families by allowing them, through an agreement with their employers, to choose paid time off as compensation for working more than 40 hours in a week.

In reality, it would give workers less time, less money, and less flexibility. It would erode overtime protections guaranteed by the Fair Labor Standards Act. It would mean a pay cut for workers without any guaranteed flexibility or time off to care for themselves or their loved ones. And it would provide few protections for workers in cases of employer misconduct or bankruptcy.

Please oppose HR 1406.

Why is this important?

For 75 years, the Fair Labor Standards Act has ensured that hourly employees who work more than 40 hours a week are paid overtime pay. It only makes sense—if workers have to spend more time away from their families and on the job, they deserve to be fairly compensated.

But John Boehner and Eric Cantor and others in Congress don’t see it that way.

The deceptively named “Working Families Flexibility Act,” recently introduced in Congress, would eliminate overtime pay and instead replace it with “comp time,” which would be allocated days off, at the discretion of the employer. This may look nice at first glance, but what it does is encourage employers to force workers to work longer hours, and pay them less for it.

Everyone deserves fair pay for the work they do. This bill would cut wages for millions and just make CEOs and Big Business richer.

This bill is moving fast and your representative needs to hear from you now. We need you to send a message now and make sure he or she does the right thing and opposes this bill.
