Support Public Workers Under Attack by NC General Assembly
We support the hard working public employees of our state. We oppose HB677 and SB18. Senate Bill 18 would further deteriorate the ability of state workers to due process and just cause protections from unfair dismissals. House Bill 677, like many other bills in the General Assembly would strip away local governments control of local resources such as Charlotte airport, Asheville water system, environmental standards, taxing authority and more. HB677 makes it illegal for local governments to recognize workers' rights to support their unions through payroll deduction of membership dues. Additionally, we call on the state to grant a real wage increase for all public workers who are many years behind cost-of-living increases.
Why is this important?
State workers provide the basic services to fulfill the human rights of the people of our state - teachers, mental health workers, sanitation workers, bus drivers, housekeepers, transportation workers. Yet, the state General Assembly wants to take away all the resources they have to quality jobs, denying their ability to provide quality services. Many state workers have been visible as part of the Moral Monday Together Forward Movement and now need your support!
