Support the Putnam County Legislature Against the NY SAFE Act

PETITION

IN SUPPORT OF THE PUTNAM COUNTY LEGISLATURE’S RESOLUTION IN OPPOSITION TO THE NY SECURE AMMUNITION AND FIREARMS ENFORCEMENT ACT OF 2013

WHEREAS the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013 (“NY SAFE Act”) was rushed to passage by the State Legislature and the Governor without any debate or opportunity for input from the People of the State of New York; and

WHEREAS the NY SAFE Act: 1) is greatly detrimental to the civil liberties of law-abiding citizens by criminalizing Constitutionally protected rights, imposing burdensome and ambiguous regulations, and depriving the People of ownership, use and free transfer of their property; 2) adversely affects commerce within the State and between the States; and 3) is ineffective in preventing violent crimes or mitigating their severity; and

WHEREAS the NY SAFE Act places undue burdens upon each county regarding license recertification, public records exemption forms, mental health recordkeeping, and other requirements that constitute unfunded mandates and require increased staffing, which burdens directly and adversely affect county taxpayers;

THEREFORE, WE THE UNDERSIGNED, express our full support and gratitude to the Putnam County Legislature for its Resolution #45 passed on February 2, 2013, which expressed opposition to the NY SAFE Act, and we call upon the Putnam County Legislature and Putnam County Executive to continue all efforts to oppose and repeal the NY SAFE Act and mitigate its burdens on taxpayers.

Why is this important?

The New York SAFE Act is a draconian gun control package that was passed without public debate or input. It infringes the Constitutionally protected rights of law-abiding citizens, interferes with commerce, deprives people of their right to use and transfer personal property, and creates unfunded mandates on taxpayers--all without preventing violent crimes or reducing their severity. The Putnam County Legislature rightly enacted a resolution opposing the NY SAFE Act, which resolution we now support with this petition.
