To: John G. Roberts, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States

Supreme Court Must Upgrade Ethics Rules

We, the undersigned citizens of the United States, petition the Supreme Court of the United States of America to adopt the canon of ethics rules used by the rest of the federal judiciary. In addition, we ask Chief Justice John G. Roberts to speak with Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, and ask them to recuse themselves in hearing the case before the court in the current session on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act after speaking and being the featured guests at a dinner where attorneys and law firms that will come before the court in this matter attended and hosted. It is a direct conflict of interest that we, the undersigned, believe undermines the integrity of the highest court in the land.

Why is this important?

Supreme Court justices currently are not subject to the same canons of ethics to which other federal judges must comply. Justices Scalia and Thomas attended and spoke at a Koch Brothers event with Citizens' United on their docket. The two were speakers and guests of honor at a dinner of the Federalist Society on the same day that they considered reviewing the Health Care Reform Act. We're calling on John G. Roberts, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, to adopt the same canons of ethics to which the other Federal judges must adhere. We further ask that Justices Scalia and Thomas recuse themselves from the review of the Health Care reform act after they have demonstrated through their participation in the Federalist Society dinner a disregard for impartiality in this matter.
