Take action for more affordable prescription drugs in Virginia

As your constituent, I am writing today to encourage you to sign the Affordable Medicine Act HB 483/SB SB 271 into law. Life saving medications only work if you can afford to take them, and Virginians can't afford to take them anymore. It's far past time to action to create a more affordable Virginia by lowering the cost of medications and protecting against harmful price-gouging. This bill passed the Virginia state legislature with wide bipartisan margins, and just needs the Governor to sign it before the May 23rd deadline.

A 2022 Mason-Dixon poll showed that 82% of Virginians – including wide bipartisan majorities – support the establishment of a PDAB, while 56% of Virginians have personally felt the negative effect of the rising cost of medicine.

It's time to make Virginia a better, more affordable place to live by supporting HB 483/SB SB 271 to automatically pass along Medicare negotiated drug prices to all Virginians and establish a Prescription Drug Affordability Board!

Why is this important?

Americans pay more for their medicine than any country on earth, and Virginians pay 36% more than the national average. 35% of Virginians chose not to fill a prescription in 2023, and 63% of voters are concerned about the cost of medication. Life-saving medications only work if you can afford them, and Virginians can't afford them anymore.

This bill would:

  • Extend Medicare negotiated lower drug prices to Virginians with other state-regulated health insurance plans.
  • Save taxpayers money by reducing state and local government spending on prescription drugs.
  • Help ensure affordable access to life-saving medicine for illnesses like cancer and diabetes.
  • Mitigate out-of-control prices set by the big drug companies.

This commonsense bill passed the Virginia state legislature by overwhelming bipartisan majorities this spring, because they recognize we need action. Please contact Governor Spanberger to sign the Affordable Medicine Act into law.
