We demand Santa Monica City Council remove this horrific image that romanticizes and glorifies Junipero Serra, the Conquistadors and the Catholic mission system. If you didn't know, Junipero Serra was the driving force behind the mass genocide and enslavement of the Indigenous people of so-called "California."
Why is this important?
The Junipero Serra image is equivalent to what an image of Adolf Hitler would be for Jewish people. When they dehumanize us as a people and create the false narrative of inferiority they can continue to wage war on our people and disregard our rights because they've painted this picture of us being subhuman, literally.
