Taxing religious institutions

Religious institutions currently pay no income or property taxes although they use services and infrastructure that all taxpayers pay for. They own large tracts of property and receive income, yet pay no taxes. This seems unfair, especially at a time when the federal deficit threatens our economic well-being.

Why is this important?

Why don't churches, synagogues, mosques etc. pay property and income taxes? I think they should as they use services and infrastructure that taxpayers pay for. I believe this would go a long way towards reducing our national debt.
