To: Arnold Donald, Carnival Corporation CEO
Tell Carnival to stop polluting the Arctic!
Dear Mr. Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation,
Carnival is the world’s largest cruise company and it is failing to protect our climate and the Arctic.
Your company’s use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) contributes to an accelerated pace of Arctic sea ice melt due to significant soot emissions, puts this delicate ecosystem at unnecessary risk of an irreversible environmental catastrophe in the event of an HFO spill, and threatens Arctic communities’ lives and livelihoods.
While Carnival publicizes its environmental initiatives and values, as CEO you have not committed to ending the use of one of the world’s dirtiest fossil fuels -- HFO. We applaud efforts to reduce dangerous sulfur dioxide emissions in ways that do not contribute to greater water pollution, but these will never be a replacement for ending the use of HFO in the Arctic. Rather than being a part of the problem, it’s time for Carnival to lead the way and adopt clean shipping solutions!
We the undersigned urge you to:
• Switch all of the cruise ships in your fleets to low-sulfur diesel fuel, and immediately end the use and carriage as fuel of all heavy fuel oil and heavy fuel oil blends in Canada, Alaska, and Arctic routes, to reduce the black carbon (soot) pollution that greatly accelerates snow and ice melt and threatens polar wildlife, communities, and ecosystems in the event of a spill.
• Further, reduce black carbon pollution on all Carnival Corp. ships by installing diesel particulate filters on all fleets.
• Take the lead in developing and implementing clean shipping technologies that help power cruise ships without fossil fuels completely!
The places we all love depend on it!
Sincerely,
Carnival is the world’s largest cruise company and it is failing to protect our climate and the Arctic.

Why is this important?
Carnival Corporation, the cruise ship giant, is polluting the Arctic -- with devastating impacts on its wildlife and communities. Carnival’s Arctic ships use heavy fuel oil -- a cheap and viscous fuel.
As a company that relies on marketing a pristine Arctic, Carnival should be doing everything it can to protect this region -- not destroy it. So we need your help to urge it to clean up its act!
