To: U.S. Congress
Tell Congress: Pass the Stand Up for Sudan Act
I urge you to pass the Stand Up for Sudan Act (H.R.2059, S.935), which would prohibit U.S. arms sales to the UAE government unless it ends material support to the Rapid Support Forces currently waging a devastating war in Sudan.
Why is this important?
After 18 months of brutal civil war, the suffering in Sudan has reached incalculable levels: 400,000 people are starving as famine spreads, and horrific satellite imagery has captured the bloody remnants of mass killings.
While the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is investigated for its role in potential war crimes, it continues to receive weapons from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) β the same government that the United States is arming with billions of dollars in weapons deals.
The Emirati government is complicit in the suffering in Sudan, and the U.S. has an obligation to hold its allies accountable. One way to leverage that influence? Lucrative U.S. arms sales, which Congress holds the keys to.
Senator Chris Van Hollen and Representative Sara Jacobs reintroduced legislation earlier this year that would prohibit U.S. arms sales to the UAE government so long as it supports the RSF in Sudan. As the largest humanitarian crisis of our time rages on, itβs our job to put pressure on lawmakers to do their part to end the suffering β that starts by urging them to pass the Stand Up for Sudan Act.
