Congress can easily fix the fiscal problems of the United States Postal Service by repealing the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 (PAEA). The PAEA forced the U.S. Postal Service to prefund its future health care benefit payments to retirees for the next 75 years—meaning that it had to put aside billions of dollars to pay for the health benefits of employees who haven't even been born yet, something that no other government or private corporation is required to do. If the PAEA had never been enacted, the U.S. Postal Service would actually have a $1.5 billion surplus today.
Why is this important?
The PAEA has caused post office and plant closures and reductions in service and employment. This stopped the longstanding practice of the USPS hiring large numbers of veterans to career jobs. Stop the slowing down of the mail to the American people and the closure of post offices and processing facilities nationwide.
