Located less than five miles from Monument Circle, Indianapolis Power and Light’s (“IPL”) Harding Street coal-fired power plant is Indianapolis’ No. 1 polluter, spewing toxic pollution into our community, endangering our health and hurting the quality of life in a city we love.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), IPL’s Harding Street plant is responsible for 88 percent of the industrial toxic releases in Marion County.
The American Lung Association has given Marion County an “F” for soot pollution and a “D” for ozone pollution.
Indianapolis has also been cited as one of the “Top 20” most polluted cities in the United States for soot pollution.
Each year, air pollution from IPL’s Harding Street plant contributes to 76 deaths, 120 heart attacks, 55 hospitalizations, and 1,300 asthma attacks, according to the Clean Air Task Force.
