Tell Kroger, the country's largest grocery store chain, not to sell genetically engineered seafood

I am writing to urge Kroger to sign the Pledge for Genetically Engineered-Free Seafood and to commit to not sell genetically engineered seafood, should it come to market.

While it is encouraging to see that Kroger “has no intention” of selling genetically engineered seafood at this time, we believe Kroger can and should do better and follow the lead of its major competitors with a FIRM commitment to not sell genetically engineered seafood in its stores should it come to market.

Americans have expressed overwhelmingly that they do not want genetically engineered salmon or other GE seafood to be approved by the Food & Drug Administration and that they would not eat it if it is approved. The FDA, however, has strongly suggested it won’t require genetically engineered seafood to be labeled, so by signing the Pledge for GE-Free Seafood you would let your customers know they can safely shop at your seafood department without fear of unintentionally buying genetically engineered fish.

Thank you for your time, and we urge Kroger to become a leader in promoting a sustainable seafood supply and your customers’ right to know what food they purchase for their families.

Why is this important?

Major grocery store chains representing more than 4,600 stores across the United States, such as Target, Aldi, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Giant Eagle, and Meijer, have committed not to sell genetically engineered seafood.

Now we are asking Kroger, the nation’s largest conventional grocery store chain, to follow suit.

Unless Kroger signs the Pledge for GE-Free Seafood, it and its subsidiaries, which include Ralphs, Fred Meyer, GFC and Food 4 Less, may soon be selling genetically engineered salmon and other genetically engineered seafood.

The Food and Drug Administration has strongly suggested that it won’t likely require genetically engineered fish to be labeled, leaving consumers with no way of avoiding them. Through the Pledge for GE-Free Seafood, however, stores and restaurants can make clear to consumers their policies against selling genetically engineered seafood.

If Kroger and its banner stores agree not to sell genetically engineered seafood, it could be one of the last steps to make sure GE seafood is dead in the water in the United States.
