Tell Mayor Bloomberg: Stop using Styrofoam trays in NYC public schools

Stop using Styrofoam trays for NYC school meals and replace them with bagasse or reusable trays.

Why is this important?

Every day NYC public schools use and discard 850,000 Styrofoam trays for school meals. That's a stack of trays over 2 miles high that goes in to our landfills, every single day! Besides the huge impact that this has on the environment, we are exposing our children to toxins from the trays when we place their food directly on it.

Mayor Bloomberg has publicly declared his commitment to green policies and our environment and once said, "All our children deserve a healthy start in life. Many people call that environmental justice; I simply call it the right thing to do."

I know that with parents, teachers, and DOE staff working together, we can affect change to an environmentally responsible and economically feasible solution. I am appealing to Mayor Bloomberg to become personally involved in making this change, As mayor, he has the authority and influence to find a workable solution in a much smaller timeframe than a grassroots organization of parents and teachers.

Mayor Bloomberg, do the right thing for our environment and our children: stop using Styrofoam trays in NYC schools and replace them with an environmentally friendly alternative.
