To: Godwin Obaseki, Edo State Governor
Tell the governor of Edo State: Protect forests and local land rights!
Tell the governor of Edo State: cancel the palm oil concession NOW!
Why is this important?
Edo State, located in Nigeria's tropical forest, is facing some of the highest rates of deforestation in Africa. And a recent order by the state's governor will give over 345,000 acres of land to a foreign palm oil company.
These forests are held sacred by local indigenous communities who have resided here since time immemorial. “The water in our streams is very clean and clear and has healing properties,” says local Chief Esogban of Umokpe “We clean up the stream every year. This is sacred land. If Okumu Palm Oil Company comes here, things will go wrong.”
We need your help to urge to the governor of Edo State to cancel this palm oil concession!
