Tell the Media: Stop Giving Shooters Access to Enduring National Notoriety
We request that the media NOT provide or report information on the identity (including photos) of people who commit acts of terror such as the recent shooting at a Connecticut elementary school. This can be accomplished by an industry-wide agreement, or, failing that, governmental regulation. The media are encouraged to provide as much information and recognition and honoring of the victims as is appropriate, but must not devote one millisecond of media space to letting the general public know who the perpetrators are. The public should be provided with only the most basic of information, in order to avoid providing the very sick individuals who commit these heinous, misdirected acts a national and worldwide stage from which to go down in infamy. Let us see if this one change in our societal norms can help stanch the spate of mass violence against innocent victims. It is the responsible thing to do. It is the RIGHT thing to do.
Why is this important?
I just read the quote popularly attributed to Morgan Freeman regarding all these senseless shootings. Whoever said this -- Morgan Freeman or someone else -- may very well be on to something. How about if the media stops reporting the identity of these terrorists? No names, no photos, nothing. It would be a very interesting experiment. And, really, does any of us even care about knowing these disturbed individuals' names or seeing their photos? Would it leave a void in your life to NOT have that information? Does hearing their names or seeing their photos enrich your life in any way? I don't want any more innocent people -- especially children! -- terrorized, injured, and murdered at the hands of someone who will do anything to go down in infamy as a household name.
