Tell the Presidential Candidates - "End Mass Incarceration in the United States"
The United States incarcerates more people than any nation on Earth. This is a distinction that must end. We urge you to take a public stance during the campaign for the presidency to end mass incarceration in the United States.
Why is this important?
This petition will be delivered to all declared candidates for President.
Here are some basic facts about the rate of incarceration in the United States:
+The incarceration rate of the United States of America was the highest in the world, at 716 per 100,000 of the national population.
+While the United States represents about 4.4 percent of the world's population, it houses around 22 percent of the world's prisoners.
+The U.S. incarcerates more people than any other nation - 2,217,000 people.
+African Americans constitute nearly 1 million of the total incarcerated population, and have nearly six times the incarceration rate of whites.
+A black male born in 1991 has a 29% chance of spending time in prison at some point in his life.
+One out of nine African American men will be incarcerated between the ages of 20 and 34.
+These numbers would be even higher if we included military facilities, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, facilities contracted by the U.S. Marshals Service, jails in Indian country, or juvenile facilities.
