The Absolute Myth of Democracy
Recent events around the world have raised questions for me about democracy and the democratic process. From banks in Cyprus stealing depositors' money, to changes in law that are claimed to be fair and yet further disadvantage the disadvantaged, there is a multitude of examples of how real democracy has been sidelined.
In so many countries of the world, citizens are told they live in a democracy and should enjoy all the benefits that bestows on them. Yet Is that actually true? I do not believe so, and want to start a process for change that recognises the Absolute Myth of Democracy and works towards a fairer society. The question we all need to ask is "Can there be democracy without equality of opportunity?"
We need representation that is not based on political dogma or the paymasters of the party, but on a commitment to those who vote. We need to encourage and guide not to punish and penalise. Of course we need welfare reform, but let's do it on the grounds of what is the right thing to do not on party dogma. Of course revenue needs to be raised through taxation but let's do it in a way that ensures that payment is proportional to income. Let's stop big, unelected corporations or powerful trades unions from using lobbying and large amounts of money to corrupt the system and influence decisions that should be based on the good of the people. Let's ensure that whatever your gender, religion, race or sexual orientation, you are given the same opportunities as everyone else. What you do with the opportunity is your decision and part of the freedom that democracy should bring. The important thing is you have that chance.
This is not a call to violence or law breaking but rather a call to use a democratic process to make changes that will result in a fairer society where, once again, the voters are the master and those we elect are our servants.

Why is this important?
I ask one simple question.
Can there be true democracy without equality of opportunity?
I do not believe so and yet it is clear that there is not such equality in our so called democratic societies. This petition is one step in trying to change that situation
