The cost of fast food wages

According to a new report released by the University of California at Berkeley, New York state taxpayers are forced to pick up the $708 million tab for the fast-food industry's low wages. In New York, the public cost of low-wage fast-food jobs is the second-highest in the country—with 60% of fast-food workers forced to rely on public assistance to cover basic needs.

As New York state taxpayers, we won't stand for our tax dollars subsidizing the fast-food industry's $7.35 billion profits when that money should be going to our schools, parks, and other vital state services. We demand you call for an investigation into the cost of the fast-food industry's low wages and hold these corporations accountable for their cost to our state.

Why is this important?

Recently released research shows how low-wage, no-benefit fast food jobs force workers to rely on public assistance programs, leaving our tax-dollars to foot the bill-- to the tune of $708 million. If you think it’s outrageous that our tax dollars are being used to line the pockets of fast food corporations instead of going to schools, park and other public services that would benefit all New Yorkers, sign our petition to the members of the New York State Legislature demanding they investigate this fast food swindle.
