The Freddie Gray Law - Assess, Treat, and Safely Transport

All State and Local police should be required and enforced by law to:
1) Evaluate all individuals arrested and taken into custody for injuries or emergency medical conditions requiring care;
2) Stabilize and treat the condition on site and transport, where appropriate to emergency medical facility; and
3) Transport all individuals in seat belted in safe and secure fashion so as not to cause or worsen bodily injury.

Why is this important?

I am a 68-year-old physician in Maryland. In 1976 as a Johns Hopkins neurology resident at Baltimore City Hospitals, we heard rumors about police arresting uncooperative and usually inebriated persons, handcuffing their hands behind their backs and then playing "Watch Out For The Dog".

I did nothing about it then. Now 38 years later after at least 3 deaths, including that of Freddie Gray 2 weeks ago, we should take steps nationwide to assure that ALL State and Local Police secure those they take into custody to avoid potentially fatal injury during transport. "Cops: Click It or Ticket!"
