Enbridge Inc. must replace its 67-year-old pipeline that rests on the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac and carries crude oil to Canadian refineries in Sarnia, Ontario, because the acknowledged lifespan of the pipeline is 33 years, and it is going to rupture.

Why is this important?

Because an oil spill will cause countless damage to the ecosystems of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron and directly effect those industries relying on these waters for their livelihood. There have been two documented pipeline leaks in the Upper Peninsula to date.
