To All U.S. Elected Officials: We Deserve a Government That Works for All of Us – NOW

Dear President Obama, Senator Reid, Speaker Boehner and ALL elected officials:

American democracy was the true winner on election night. Our voices were heard in huge numbers and spoke louder than all the money that was put into both campaigns. It’s clear the American public is ready NOW for a change in the tenor of business in Washington – not after another hard-fought election cycle, not in two years, not in four years. The time and opportunity for shift is NOW. It’s the only time we have.

While a majority of voters opted for four more years under President Obama’s administration, an almost equal number of voters likely feel disappointment and frustration that the ideas they believe in and support will not be heard, and that this great nation will perhaps go down a path they believe is far from ideal. Every one of these voices must now be represented. The Presidency, Senate and House of Representatives are now in place to serve all of these constituents (no matter who they voted for), in addition to those Americans who did not vote.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the American public saw President Obama and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie cut through bureaucratic and partisan red tape to work together and deliver relief to a devastated area. This was a literal and figurative representation of what our elected leaders can accomplish when parties work together to create workable solutions for our nation and its citizens. We’ve seen our nation come together after other crises, too – both natural and manmade. Why must we be brought to our knees to see cooperation between our elected officials?

It is time for TRUE bipartisanship that is not just a politically correct talking point. In his gracious concession speech on election night, even Mr. Romney reiterated that at this time in our nation’s history, “we can’t risk partisan bickering and political posturing. Our leaders have to reach across the aisle to do the people’s work.” This includes all leaders – those on both sides of the aisle, and across all branches of government.

Actions speak louder than words, and NOW is the time for our elected officials to actively work in service to the citizens of this nation, not to party affiliations or special interests. It is time for bipartisanship and forward momentum to become the rule, not the exception. It is time for our elected officials in Washington to work for the people they were elected to serve and are privileged to serve, including those citizens who did not vote for them. It is time to find workable solutions instead of obstructing our nation’s progress and evolution.

There will be disagreements. Fine! Let’s argue and debate, and let’s do so respectfully and constructively. Let’s hear both sides – all sides – and find where ideas can be expanded and adjusted in order to reveal the solutions that move this nation forward. The ideas of all parties in Washington and across this nation have differences within them. Excellent! We can learn from our differences, educate one another and find common ground, but only when our egos and ideologies are put aside, and only when we consciously decide to work for the good of the many, not the interests of a few. No one is going to ‘win’ all of the time. Give and take will be required. Some decisions will be difficult and both parties will, undoubtedly, disappoint their base at some level, at some point or another. (Let’s also keep in mind the many Americans who choose not to identify with one of the two major parties. Their voices matter, too.) Next, TAKE ACTION, MAKE DECISIONS and GET THINGS DONE.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that most Americans want many of the same things: to be happy, to be healthy, to be prosperous, and to be safe. I think we are all ready to be united as well. It is time, once and for all, for true healing to be revealed in our nation. There are many possible routes to every solution to every challenge our nation faces. We deserve a government that works with our best interests in mind. We deserve a government that no longer stalls our nation's progress and evolution because of party ideologies. We deserve a government that takes action to reveal workable solutions in service to all of its citizens FIRST.

This petition respectfully requests that ALL OF YOU show us and prove to us through action NOW why you – Democrat or Republican or other – are there in service to the citizens of this nation.

Why is this important?

The November 2012 election is over, and many diverse voices were heard. It is time for our government to work beyond party ideologies and begin doing the work of moving our nation forward in service to ALL U.S. citizens.
