American citizens should push our state and national legislators to change our voting day from the first Tuesday (after the first Monday) of the month to the first Sunday of the month. Voting on Tuesdays is a primary reason why American elections have a notoriously low participation rate. Switching the voting day to Sundays would allow many working Americans to have their voice counted when it would otherwise be difficult or impossible. The reasons for voting on Tuesdays are based on our past agrarian society that have no basis in today's working world. As our Constitution states in the Fourteenth Amendment, "[n]o State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States" and voting is our most basic democratic right.
