Transparency in reporting on coronavirus testing volumes in New York

New York City began diligently reporting both the numerator (positive cases) and the denominator (total tests). Well done to everyone who raised their voice to ask for transparency.

Require all coronavirus testing centers to issue transparent daily updates to New York state in order to inform the public about the volume of testing as well as the infection rate.

Why is this important?

One of the most pressing needs in managing the spread of coronavirus is to understand not just the number of new cases but also the number of tests administered. Across the country, there is confusion over how many tests are being conducted by public health labs and private ones. New York state has stopped providing data on the number of tests performed, and daily Governor Andrew Cuomo addresses issues around the volume of testing and getting insights. This can be fixed. The governor could require all testing entities in New York State to report the number of tests performed each day by a certain time to a central body.

This petition calls on the Governor to issue this demand, create a simple system for reporting and make this data available to the public urgently. We can't take necessary actions if we don't have the right data.

Dear all,

Thank you for signing. Today NY Governor Andrew Cuomo announced 69 new cases in New York State. In his remarks he referred to over 400+ tests taken since last night, an improvement he said from several days ago when only 200 tests a day were being administered.

19% of the 729 total known cases in NY have led to hospitalizations so far, with 65 patients in ICUs. There have been at least two deaths to date.

It's imperative we know how testing volume is performing. The lack of availability has likely hampered our understanding of the severity of the spread. The Governor can ensure this data is publicly available.

Wishing you all well-

Justin
