The Equifax hack proves that private, profit-based companies like Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian cannot be trusted. We demand that congress put the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a transparent and accountable public agency) in charge of our financial data, credit ratings and reports.
Why is this important?
More than 143 million Americans had their personal financial data stolen because Equifax put profit over safety. This included social security numbers, credit card numbers, bank account info, and much more. This is unacceptable - no private, for-profit company should have our data without our consent. It's time to turn over the critical job of protecting our data and providing credit ratings and reports to CFPB, an accountable public agency designed to protect consumers.
