Twin Legislation Bill for the State of Michigan
We, the undersigned, petition you Senator Rebekah Warren, to sponsor a bill for Twin Legislation in the State of Michigan similar to that of Minnesota's "twin bill" sponsored by Senator Dennis Frederickson, and signed into law by Governor Tim Paw Lenty, which gives parents a primary voice in the classroom placement of their multiple children. As parents we believe, that arbitrarily separating all twins, and higher order multiples, based solely on their multiplicity, and the past practices of the Department of Education, is discriminatory and therefore unacceptable. Multiplicity is a birthright and the decision to separate or keep the children together within the classroom should be made on a case by case basis, based upon the children's individual needs. we believe as parents/guardians of our multiple children that we should have the primary voice in any classroom placement decision made for them, as we know best their individual psychological, emotional, and social needs.
Why is this important?
My twins will start Kindergarten in the fall of 2013, and I believe it is the parents right to choose, rather than the schools', whether the twins should be separated or kept in the same class. Our children's emotional, social and psychological stability should be top priority especially when entering this major time of transition, so as the child can focus on their educational experience.
