U.S. Senate: Reject Trump's Bigoted Presidential Appointees

Senators should pledge to not approve any presidential nominees whose track record includes giving public statements, and/or advancing policies, legislation, programs, and/or campaigns that disenfranchise women, LGBTQI persons, people of color, religious minorities, immigrants and refugees, veterans, youth, persons with disabilities, as well as individuals and households living in poverty.

These nominations include all appointments that require approval by the United States Senate, such as judges appointed to the federal judicial bench (e.g. Article III judges), along with specified officers in cabinet-level departments, U.S. attorneys, U.S. marshals, the military services, independent agencies, as well as the Foreign Service and uniformed civilian services.

Why is this important?

As our country transitions to the presidency of Donald J. Trump, preserving the social progress made by President Barack H. Obama and his predecessors as it relates to LGBTQI rights, women’s rights, civil liberties, religious freedom, and rights of persons with disabilities is of paramount importance. Unfortunately, statements and policy documents published by President-elect Trump and his Vice President Mike Pence threaten to undo this progress. Their platform includes banning an entire religious group from entering the United States, endorsing discrimination against LGBTQI persons, undermining and overturning Roe vs. Wade, and denying climate change. To this end, President-elect Trump recently appointed a leading anti-gay activist, Ken Blackwell, as head of his domestic transition team; a white nationalist, Steve Bannon, as Chief Policy Strategist; and a climate change denier, Myron Ebell, to lead the Environmental Protection Agency transition. Appointing officials with an established history of disregarding scientific evidence and discriminating against marginalized communities is a troubling trend that would normalize a culture of bigotry, tarnish the integrity of public service, and undermine our constitutional freedoms.

Presidential appointees influence and shape the direction of any administration’s platform, and once implemented, these policies have a lasting impact on the social fabric of our nation. As the gatekeepers of our democracy, senators play a critical role in maintaining rule of law, so we are calling on them to exercise their political responsibilities consistent with these duties. Their pledge will ensure that all appointees under President Trump will serve with honor and continue to embody the values that uphold freedom and justice for all Americans.
To join the movement against discrimination and fear, please sign the petition below and then ask your senators directly to commit to this pledge via a mailed letter, an e-mail, and/or a social media post.
