Many US government agencies servers and desktops already use Linux, the high performance and completely free operating system. This petition is an effort to force IT departments in all state and federal agencies to stop throwing taxpayer money away on proprietary systems that are expensive and not as stable, flexible, compatible or secure as Linux.
Why is this important?
Wasteful spending on unreliable software and operating systems is easily containable. Moving IT departments away from vendor-driven proprietary solutions to transparent open-source OS and apps costs nothing and can save hundreds of thousands of dollars
