If a couple files federal tax return "married filing jointly" the State of Utah makes the out-of-state husband pay Utah State Income Tax. My husband was laid off Feb. 26, 2009 after having worked at Williams International for 23 1/2 years. He was unemployed for 51 weeks. Moved to Florida March 2010. Paid Utah Income Tax for 2010, didn't have to pay in 2011, have to in 2012. Utah has no right to his State Income tax.
Why is this important?
We, as a family, have been directly affected by the change in "Residency Status" and my husband having to pay Utah State Income Tax when there are no jobs for him in Utah. 51 weeks is a long time to have to look and Florida was the State that had a job for him. He is close to retirement and we would like to stay here but may not be able to afford to.
