To: The Tennessee State House, The Tennessee State Senate, and Governor Bill Lee
Vote NO to reduce benefits for children that fail to make “satisfactory academic progress” in school
Please vote NO on Stacey Campfield (R) Knoxville, proposed law SB132, to "breaking the cycle of poverty" by reducing Temporary Assistance to Needy Families benefits for children not making “satisfactory academic progress” in school.
Current Temporary Assistance to Needy Families benefits laws provides for a 20% cut in benefits if a child fails to attend school. Senator Campfield proposes a cut up to 30% if a student without disabilities, does not both advance to the next grade and meet minimum requirements on math and reading components of certain standardized tests.
With a maximum benefit of $185 a month for a mother with two children, the proposed law could remove 60+ dollars a month from a struggling family.
I request the Tennessee Senate to vote down SB132. I request the Tennessee House to vote down the proposed bill if it passes the Tennessee Senate. I request Governor Haslam to veto the bill if it passes the Tennessee legislature.
Thank you
