Why is this important?

The voting Rights Act is one or the most important pieces of civil rights legislation Congress has ever passed. Last years Supreme Court decision weakened critical provisions of it. It did tell Congress that it needed to update the Act in order to address how times have changed in the last fifty years, this bill makes an important step toward doing that.
