While congress wrestles with a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to Texas, I propose that Congress craft interstate legislation to facilitate and fund a national water pipeline to capture and sell water runoff from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana to parched regions of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California and our Mexican neighbors to the south. Western states droughts come and go, but the long term prognosis for water supply remains bleak without major efforts to alleviate. Hundreds of jobs would be created in the long term and Gulf States would certainly find needed use for water sale funds as the west could resume water served at dinner and even keep green their many lawns.
Why is this important?
While not nearly as expensive as oil, water runs a close second among necessary commodities. Millions of gallons of water are allowed to run freely into the Gulf of Mexico after torrential rainstorms that keep the Gulf States nearly perpetually green, but no significant efforts are in place to divert any of this daily waterfall.
