Subject: Demand for Independent Audit of Stamford Board of Education Spending
We, the undersigned residents, taxpayers, and stakeholders of Stamford, Connecticut, are calling for a full, independent, and transparent audit of the Stamford Board of Education’s financial practices and expenditures.
As the Board of Education continues to manage a substantial portion of our city’s annual budget, the need for fiscal accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship of public funds is more critical than ever. Recent reports, budget increases, and lack of clarity around certain expenditures have raised serious concerns among community members regarding how funds are allocated and whether they are directly supporting the educational outcomes for our students.
We believe the following issues warrant immediate action:
- Lack of publicly accessible details about contract allocations, vendor relationships, and administrative overhead
- Growing concerns from educators, parents, and taxpayers about misaligned priorities and spending inefficiencies
We respectfully demand the following:
- A comprehensive, independent financial audit of the Stamford Board of Education for the last five fiscal years, conducted by an impartial third-party auditing firm not previously affiliated with the city or its vendors;
- A public report of the audit findings, including a breakdown of spending by category (administrative costs, student services, facilities, etc.);
- Regular financial reviews moving forward, including performance audits that assess the impact of spending on educational outcomes;
- Open town hall forums to present audit results and receive public feedback on financial practices.
Our children deserve a school system that puts their needs first. Our educators deserve to work in a system where funds are allocated efficiently. And our taxpayers deserve to know how their hard-earned dollars are being spent.
Transparency builds trust. It is time for accountability.
We urge Stamford’s elected officials to act immediately and authorize an independent audit of the Stamford Board of Education.
